Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced into rings
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Step 1: Separate the onion rings and pat them thoroughly dry with paper towels. Excess moisture will prevent them from crisping properly.
- Step 2: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Step 3: Pour the buttermilk into a separate shallow bowl. Dip each onion ring in the buttermilk, ensuring it's fully coated, then dredge it in the flour mixture, pressing gently to ensure the flour adheres well.
- Step 4: Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the onion rings to the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
- Step 5: Fry the onion rings for 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Step 6: Season immediately with salt while still warm, and serve immediately.
Notes
- Store leftover chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, maintaining their crispness best when not stacked.
- For perfectly reheated chips, briefly air fry or bake at 350°F (175°C) for 2-3 minutes until warmed through and crispy again, avoiding soggy results.
- Serve these addictive onion ring chips alongside your favorite burger or dipping sauce, such as a spicy mayo or ranch dressing, for a truly satisfying snack or side.
- To achieve extra crispy chips, double-dip your onion rings in the buttermilk before dredging them in the flour mixture, ensuring a thicker, crispier coating.
