Ingredients
- Ground beef: 1 pound
- Yellow onions: 2 large, thinly sliced
- Beef broth: 1 cup
- Worcestershire sauce: 2 tablespoons
- Balsamic vinegar: 1 tablespoon
- Dried thyme: 1 teaspoon
- Swiss cheese: 4 slices
- Hamburger buns: 4
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease.
- Step 2: Add the sliced onions to the skillet with the ground beef. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are softened and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Step 3: Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Step 4: While the mixture simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns.
- Step 5: Spoon the French onion beef mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Top each with a slice of Swiss cheese and the top half of the bun.
Notes
- Refrigerate leftover French Onion Beef in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- For best results, reheat the sloppy joe mixture in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through.
- Serve with a side of crispy potato wedges or a simple green salad to balance the richness.
- To really amplify the French onion flavor, deglaze the skillet with a splash of dry sherry after caramelizing the onions before adding the beef broth.
