Ditch the fryer! These baked onion ring chips achieve ultimate crunch thanks to the Panko and Parmesan crust. A guilt-free, savory snack.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium-large Yellow Onions
  • 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 large Eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup finely Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika (optional, for color and flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • Cooking Spray or Olive Oil Spray, as needed

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Peel the onions and slice them crosswise into 1/4-inch thick rings, separating the layers into individual rings.
  2. Step 2: Set up a dredging station using three shallow bowls: In the first bowl, mix the flour, garlic powder, and paprika; in the second bowl, lightly beat the eggs; and in the third bowl, combine the Panko breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese.
  3. Step 3: Dredge each onion ring thoroughly, following the sequence: first dip into the seasoned flour (shaking off excess), then dip into the egg wash, and finally press firmly into the Panko-Parmesan mixture until fully coated.
  4. Step 4: Arrange the coated rings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they do not overlap. Lightly mist the tops of the onion rings generously with cooking spray or olive oil spray to promote crisping.
  5. Step 5: Bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Flip the onion rings, mist the second side with oil spray, and bake for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, or until the chips are deeply golden brown and very crispy. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For optimal texture, store any leftovers loosely covered at room temperature for up to two days, avoiding airtight containers which trap moisture and lead to sogginess.
  • To bring back that glorious crunch, reheat the chips on a baking sheet in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes, or use an air fryer until they are sizzling hot and fully crisped.
  • Serve immediately alongside a creamy, spicy dipping sauce, such as Sriracha ranch or a tangy sweet-and-sour ketchup, for a perfect flavor contrast.
  • The key to non-fried crispiness is the oil mist; spray generously before baking and again after flipping, ensuring the entire crumb coating looks slightly damp, which promotes browning and crunch.
