Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- ½ cup cream cheese frosting (recipe below)
- Blue food coloring (gel or liquid)
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and granulated sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy. Whisk in the egg and melted butter.
- Step 2: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing with a wooden spoon or electric mixer until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Step 3: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Step 4: Punch down the dough and roll it out into a 12×18 inch rectangle. In a small bowl, combine cinnamon and brown sugar. Sprinkle evenly over the dough. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts (if using). Tightly roll up the dough from the long side into a log.
- Step 5: Cut the log into 12 equal slices. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Step 6: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before frosting. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the frosting for a Cookie Monster effect. Frost and enjoy!
Notes
- Store leftover Cookie Monster Cinnamon Rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
- For perfectly warm and gooey rolls, reheat them gently in the microwave for 15-20 seconds, or bake them in a preheated oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes.
- Serve these monstrously delicious rolls with a tall glass of milk for an extra special treat, or alongside a cup of strong coffee for a delightful breakfast or brunch.
- To achieve a vibrant Cookie Monster blue, add the food coloring to the frosting gradually, mixing well after each addition, until you reach your desired shade.
