Ingredients
- Mushrooms (cremini, shiitake, or button), 1 pound, sliced
- Yellow onions, 2 medium, thinly sliced
- Olive oil, 3 tablespoons
- Butter, 2 tablespoons
- Balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons
- Brown sugar, 1 tablespoon
- Fresh thyme leaves, 1 teaspoon
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Step 1: Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Step 2: Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften and turn translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Step 3: Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet with the onions. Stir to combine and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms release their moisture and begin to brown, about 10-15 minutes.
- Step 4: Stir in the balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Step 5: Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mushrooms and onions are deeply caramelized and the balsamic vinegar has reduced to a glaze, about 5-7 more minutes.
Notes
- Store leftover caramelized mushrooms and onions in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- For best results, reheat in a skillet over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, to revive the caramelized texture.
- Serve these savory delights as a topping for grilled steak, a flavorful addition to pasta, or as a scrumptious side dish.
- Don't overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if needed to ensure proper browning and caramelization instead of steaming.
